A client tells his story

I was sleeping rough in a garage in Grahame Park and had been wrestling with a history of using alcohol. Previously I had contributed a lot, getting involved in community volunteering and much work helping other people. Somehow I had not looked after myself.

I presented to HAB after being persuaded by my friends.  It was embarrassing to be in that position.  People there were welcoming and I sat down that day with a member of staff who talked to me how things can change for me. I found the staff very engaging and encouraging for my needs. I was encouraged by this faith in me and this helped me abstain from using alcohol.

The staff member, Kate, encouraged me to be found in the garage and a team of Barnet Rough Sleeping team came out to me.  I was then put forward for housing locally in the borough.  My place is fabulous with a bit of garden I can cultivate. This is worlds away from where I was a few months before. Most importantly, I now feel and believe I can establish my relationship with my son and that we have a safe environment to get to know each other again.

The members of staff I would like to thank are Kate, Anne, Ian, Jenaro, Tracey and Abi and Martin (from Barnet Rough Sleeping Team) but more importantly the support and encouragement from the wonderful volunteers at HAB.
