Until now the lack of social or ‘council’ housing in the Borough has meant that the only real route off the street in Barnet has been via the private rented sector — often unaffordable even with housing benefit. During 2020, HAB worked in partnership with Encircle Housing and Civitas Social Housing (part of CIM) to modernise a property in Golders Green. It will provide safe, secure, supported homes for 42 single homeless people. They will live there for up to a year with HAB providing structured support — initially providing intense, hands-on support before encouraging greater independence as people move towards securing a private sector tenancy. Joe Lee, HAB’s CEO, says:

“This project is particularly valuable because it opens up a pathway from homelessness back into the community that has simply not been available in Barnet before.”
